Hair Transplantation
Due to heredity and the effects of male hormones, about 50% of all European males suffer from damaged hair roots, which sooner or later cause typical male hair loss. Some hair roots (beard, body hair, hair at back of head) are not sensitive to male hormones, and are therefore not susceptible to hair loss. This knowledge is used in the science of surgical hair transplantation. Hair transplantation is a redistribution of healthy hair follicles, which are resistant to male hormones, from the hair fringe or permanent hair zone at the back of the head, to the balding areas. With the correct surgical technique, transplanted hair follicles never fall out again.
A hair transplant is performed under local anaesthetic and is virtually free from pain and risk.
The procedure involves excising a narrow strip of scalp from the permanent hair zone at the back of the head containing the hair follicles to be treated for transplanting. The resulting incision is closed with fine stitches leaving later a virtually undetecable scar, covered with hair growth. Thereafter, also under local anaesthetic, the tiny follicular unit grafts are grafted into fine openings in the scalp.
It is not necessary to dress the wound. In the transplanted area small scabs form over the grafts which fall off four to fourteen days later. After four days the hair can be washed again. After seven to ten days, depending on the size of the area transplanted, the patient is presentable enough to resume social activities. Light work may be resumed the very next day.
Hair transplantation is performed in Dr. Wolter’s practice for aesthetic surgery by a specialist surgeon. Specialist expertise is crucial to the success of the operation, as the only guarantee for new hair growth is an experienced surgical team (surgeon and three nurses) cooperating hand in hand and ensuring that the blood supply of the extracted hair follicles is not interrupted for too long a period. Also, only an experienced surgeon is capable of producing a natural look, where instead of growing in artificial rows, the transplanted hair assumes the natural growth direction.
