Ear Realignment (anthelixplasty)

Anthelixplasty or ear realignment is carried out through an incision behind the ear. The incision is later invisible. Through this incision, some ear cartilage may be removed, some reformed until the desired result is produced. From the age of twelve upwards the procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic. With younger patients, general anaesthetic is necessary. A single night in-patient stay for observation is recommended for children, but is not absolutely necessary. The headband applied during the operation is removed after around ten days, at which point the threads behind the ear are also removed. 

A headband must be worn for at least four weeks afterwards, in order to prevent the ears, which are still sensitive, from being bent. The ear must be treated with great care for a total of over three months, which begins with hair washing and brushing and also includes sports and other exertions.

Only after half a year does the ear reach its former strength. Smaller scars behind the ear may be treated with a scar cream. The alternative to this definitive ear correction is the so-called thread technique, in which the ear is forced into position using a number of threads. This operation is much shorter, but the head bandage needs to be worn for a shorter period of time, but the occurrence of regressions is more frequent.

If one of the threads pulls out in the course of time, because the bone structure remains unchanged, the ear will return to its original position—you pay for a shorter and simpler operation by more frequent follow-up operations.
